It seems like so many of the best drum & bass artists are duos, and a pair of producers from the UK, RoyGreen & Protone, are gaining serious steam. They’ll be releasing two new tracks on April 20, to be featured on Intrigue Music’s 15th Anniversary compilation album. Intrigue are a stalwart of the underground scene out of Bristol, and this album marks a milestone in their history, which began way back in 2003.
One of the two tracks coming out on Friday is a cool, percussive, dreamy track called “Mountains,” featuring vocals from Julia Marks. The track showcases RoyGreen & Protone’s chops as producers with a wide variety of well-tuned sounds, simple, yet elegant chord progressions in the bass line, and outstanding use of intricate percussion. The percussion in the track has a very true-to-life quality that is reminiscent of the roots of drum & bass music, all the way back to the breaks. Marks’ powerful voice adds the perfect dose of soul, and really ties the track together to create an intelligent, mellow vibe.
