"When he passed away, that was a big reminder for me that I'm gonna pass away too one day."
Mike Posner is presently in the middle of a walk across America, but he paused to record himself playing a song perhaps nearer and dearer to him now than when he wrote it. He dedicated his acoustic performance of "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" to none other than the late Avicii.
"This song is dedicated to Tim – Avicii," he says in the beginning of the roughly three-minute clip. "It's always dedicated to him anytime I sing it now until forever. A lot of you may or may not know that when he passed away, that was a big reminder for me that I'm gonna pass away too one day."
Posner told CBS that his walk across America was his way of moving past recent tragedies and inspiring others to do the same. In addition to mourning Avicii, with whom he collaborated on "Stay With You," he also suffered the loss of his father in 2017 as well as that of Mac Miller the following year.
In fact, the original rendition of "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" was acoustic guitar based. A remix delivered by Norwegian duo Seeb topped the charts in dozens of countries. Avicii is referenced in the opening line of both versions.
