Ikea and Teenage Engineering tease new low-cost impromptu DJ setup

Ikea and Teenage Engineering have an eye out for the casual bedroom DJ who rolls on a budget. The two Swedish manufacturers have begun to tease their collaborative low-cost turntable, speaker, and lighting design called Frekvens. The Frekvens set has been in development for nearly two years and is expected to come in considerably cheaper than most other equipment on the market, with an early price range reportedly set between $5 and $99. The product’s appeal enlies in it’s self-contained storage and fast, easy setup, meaning users can go from zero to party real quick.

In an interview with Ad Age, Teenage Engineering co-founder Jesper Kouthoofd explains the inspiration behind the upcoming concept,

“Marcus [Engman, head of design at Ikea] got this idea that it’s kind of like a home roadie thing, like you could set up your own sound system. Then I started thinking about how, a lot of Swedes, we go to Ikea when we have a party—to get candles, napkins. Maybe we could do something that’s really affordable so people can buy a sound system, including a light show—a complete party.

The turntable prototype is still being finished, but the Frekvens is expected to hit shelves by next summer. See the first look at Frekvens below.
